Position: Police Officer Trainee

Compensation and Benefits
Salary:
Starting as a Police Officer Trainee: $43.70/hour, $7,575/month, $90,900 annually.
Upon academy graduation (Step 1): $9,207/month, $110,484 annually.
Top Step (Step 5): $136,404 annually ($65.58/hour).
Additional Benefits:
Longevity Pay: Up to 14% of base salary after 20 years.
Education Incentives:
6% of base salary for Intermediate POST Certificate or AA/AS degree.
12.8% of base salary for Advanced POST Certificate or BA/BS degree.
Bilingual Pay: Up to $1,800 annually for Spanish.
Uniform Allowance: $1,200 annually.
Holiday Pay: Compensation for 14 holidays annually (140 hours).
Sick Leave Cash Out:
Up to 6 days annually for employees with less than 10 years of service.
Up to 12 days annually for employees with more than 10 years of service.
Vacation Cash Out:
Up to 60 hours annually for employees with less than 5 years of service.
Up to 120 hours annually for employees with more than 5 years of service.
Other Incentives:
Overtime opportunities.
Assignments with additional compensation (e.g., K9, Film Assignments, Field Training Officer).

Job Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Age: At least 20 years and 6 months at the time of appointment.
Citizenship: U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have applied for citizenship (must obtain citizenship within three years of application).
Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Driver's License: Valid Class C driver's license.
Residency: California residency within 98 miles of SMPD required upon hire.
Tobacco-Free: Police officers must be non-users of tobacco products.
Certifications:
Must obtain a regular Basic California POST Certificate within 18 months of hire.
Desirable Experience:
Military background or public contact experience.
Hiring Process:

NTN written exam.
Physical Fitness Qualifier (PFQ).
Oral interview.
Background investigation.
Disqualifiers:
Convictions for misdemeanors involving domestic violence or any felony.
